Each of us has gifts that we bring to this planet. Some of us take ages to find our gifts and what we have to offer, others know intuitively from early in their lives what it is that they want to give. I am very fortunate as I have many gifts; the one I intend to explore more fully this year is my creative gift. I want to share more f my passion for creativity with others.
I remember talking about the concept of the gift with a colleague when doing my doctorate. She was looking at blood donation and giving blood. She explored what people understood by the concept of gift and found that some see it as giving in order to get something in return so it is a reciprocal process, but there is disappointment if you feel that the gift you received is not ‘equal’ to the one you gave. Others see giving blood as a form of altruism where you are giving for the life of others.
Jesus taught about gifts and gratefulness through a story of the birds being clothed in beauty and fed through the seeds in the fields to remind us that we only have to look around ourselves and see how much we have to be able to be thankful. The beauty of our surroundings, our friendships, our family.
Gift by R.S. Thomas
Some ask the world and are diminished in the receiving of it. You gave me only this small pool that the more I drink from, the more overflows me with sourceless light.
I feel to be able to give with love you have to be able to receive gracefully with acceptance. I begin to see the gift you are through the realisation of the gift I am.
