Lifelong learning is the ongoing self-motivated pursuit of knowledge which can be for personal or professional reasons and occurs at all ages
The term recognizes that learning is not confined to childhood or the classroom but takes place throughout your life and in a range of situations. It can enhance social inclusion, being an active citizen and through it you can incur personal development, and increase your self-sustainability and become more employable.
Learning takes place on an ongoing basis from our daily interactions with others and the world around us. It can be formal, informal or self-directed.
Formal education tends to emphasise the acquisition of knowledge and is less focused on the learning that can enhance our lives and sustain us as human beings. Over our lives we can develop skills, take on new knowledge, being able to learn new ideas, concepts and activities keeps us able to look at life with a freshness. It also enables us to live in harmony through considering others and seeing ourselves as citizens which can in turn lead to personal fulfillment.
Wisdon is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it – Albert Einstein
There is no end to education
It is not that you read a book,
pass an examination,
and finish with education.
The whole of life, from the moment you are born to the moment you die
is the process of learning.
I love to learn and feel excited by new roles as they always mean there are new opportunities ahead. It is rare nowadays for anyone to stay in the same organisation for life and where you do see someone who has been there for decades you often see someone who is stale, who lacks ideas, dynamism and innovation.
Being able to move and change leads to new possibilities. If we seek to became a novice every year we will always understand what its like to be a beginner. In this way you can retain compassion, for those who are starting out in their careeer and offer the opportunities they need to grow and develop. No-one can expect to be able to progress without moving and taking on new ways. Our grandparents may have been able to stay put but we live in different times with the norm being changing jobs every few years.
